Rusty Charlie

Rusty Charlie

I mentioned earlier that A.J. will be performing in Guys and Dolls, Jr which will be opening in a week. Early in the rehearsal process, the costumer let the parents know that, at this theatre, it is the actor’s responsibility to get their own costume. The costumer would help if we had trouble. The guidance we got was that they wanted “Rusty Charlie” to appear in a maroon or red three piece suit, maroon or red striped shirt, wide tie, black shoes and hat. We were encouraged to look at resale shops, Goodwill, and St. Vinnie’s. As a last resort, we could try Burlington Coat Factory or Goldmans, but their suits would be more expensive.

Do you know how difficult it is to find a used red suit for a preteen? Very few kids wear suits these days and those that do, don’t buy “red” ones. If they do, they certainly don’t try to resell them. I found a black vest and black alligator skin shoes at Burlington Coat Factory. I literally “lucked” out when I found an ebay seller with the clothing store in New York named Lucky86 that sells kids suits of various colors. The results of our costuming adventure are shown above. With as much trouble as we had costuming one individual, I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to costume an entire show.
