Hal Leonard Jazz Series

Smooth Jazz 106.9 is a favorite in our household as was Smooth Jazz 93.3, WJZI, before it became a soft rock station. Both kids fall asleep listening to 106.9. In fact, Erin could pick out the differences between songs by Mindi Abair and Dave Koz when she was about 5 years old.

Occasionally, Kristi will go out the WJZX (Smooth Jazz 106.9) website to see what events are coming up and to enter any contests they may have. About a week ago, she found out that she won 2 tickets to all 4 shows of the Hal Leonard Jazz Series at the Pabst Theater. Last night was the first of those shows. She and I got to see Jacky Terrasson, a jazz pianist and composer.

It was an amazing show. It was the first time for me to attend an event at the Pabst Theater and it is really a wonderful venue. Along with Jacky Terrasson, he had Sean Smith on the bass and Jamire Williams on the drums. The trio was fantastic. I have been learning piano for about 8 months now and I can really appreciate the difficulty of the things he was doing with the piano. During one song, he actually leaned into the case of the Steinway he was playing and played the piano strings like a set of drums. It was unreal. At another point, he was playing so fast that his hands were a blur two to four inches over the keyboard. Wow.

To make it fair, we will be taking the kids to couple of the other concerts as well. The one next month is a saxophonist, and the following months have a vocalist and a guitarist. I hope I get to go to at least one more.
